At the end of almost every session, I am asked by a parent “why do you choose to photograph children?”. For most parents the question arises because they struggle to capture images of their own children, and wonder how someone could possible have the patience to devote their entire area of specialty to these little people.
My response? “Because they are real, genuine, and true.”
Kids are who they are. No masks, no falseties, no agendas. They just want to be heard, have fun, scream, laugh, jump, play, and explore. So I ask you, if you could do those things in your job every day, wouldn’t you? Let’s face it, we don’t allow ourselves to do those things because we feel socially awkward, and as adults the rules tell us we are no longer allowed. But, as a child photographer in Toronto, who photographs babies and kids, I can tell you that thankfully I am exempt from ever growing up completely, and I love that!
When I photograph kids, I am never out to capture that perfect expression. Kids aren’t perfect. Life isn’t perfect. At the end of the day, when you look back at your life and the lives of your kids, are you going to want to say “she had such a perfect smile, and sat so well and posed for our photographer”, or are you going to want to remember:
- how she crinkles her nose when she giggles
-how laughing too hard sometimes made her pee her pants
-how when she lost her first tooth, her tongue would poke through the little hole and she’d grin ear to ear in delight
-how when the teacher reported that she cut her own bangs at school, you overcame that instinct to hide her away from cameras, and instead took her to a photographer to capture the event
-how she folds her arms crossly when she has to sit next to her brother (and if we capture that in images, you’ll be glad to look back on it…and trust me, so will she!)
-how he gets that mischevious grin that tells you he’s just done something naughty, is about to, or is plotting to take over the world
-how there was a time when you could hold them in the palm of your hand, feel their chests rise and fall with every breath, and wonder in the delight of their sleeping faces.
CAPTURE THE LIVES OF YOUR CHILDREN – NOW. TOMORROW THEY WILL HAVE CHANGED, EVEN IF JUST A LITTLE BIT.
In the spirit of documenting children through photographs, I give you two incredibly funny videos, and proof of why I love what I do so much.
I’d love to see you in the studio to capture YOUR life’s moments.
